Regarding "fml"

Recently I have seen a great proliferation of "fml" (f___ my life) on the Internet- manifesting itself in away messages, facebook statuses, myspace bulletins, etc. How did life become so frivolous that it could be contensed into a three letter acronym of "emo-ness"?

Back in the day, someone abbreviated "laugh out loud" to lol, for a great deal of things evoked laughter. Though in everyday Internet vernacular, it does not always suggest the physical act of laughing out loud, it has become commonplace as an alternative to "okay", "I don't feel like talking", or "I can't think of anything else to say". Replacing this phrase to express true "laughing out loud" is ROFL (Rolling on the floor laughing). For those that truly roll on the floor laughing, I guess you'll have to think of a new acronym.

To express surprise and consternation, the phrase "wtf" (what the f____) is commonly employed. Usually astonishment is a rather sudden thing (when is it not?) so a short burst of "wtf" is acceptable to express such a feeling.

However, emos are suppose to be long winded and dramatic. How can "fml" suffice to sum up all feelings on grief, anxiety, etc... ...Unless it is being used too lightly (which it is). For most people who spam "fml" a lot, I find it difficult to take pity. As a fellow internet user, I understand that even having an internet connection long enough to sustain an away message is a blessing (it means you aren't borrowing the internet in the library or whatever)... (Grammar falls apart here) Whatever the case, I value life, and I think people should not dismiss their life (fml!) so quickly from simple events that will probably be resolved the next day etc. etc.

Hyperbole is one thing. But then there's disrespect for the most important of things-- and that borders on blasphemy. Anywho-- just some thoughts.

Today

Today I went biking with family at Crystal Cove / El Morro / Something like that;
I added some new photos on facebook. The weather was quite nice today, except a little warmer than I generally like. I ate a slice of pizza from Z Pizza for lunch- tasty indeed.

Much to my dismay, I took a really long nap. For dinner, I partook in Macaroni and Cheese from Trader Joes. Calculus homework is quite difficult. As of now, I am finishing an essay comparing "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" by T.S. Elliot and The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

This post was pretty boring and literal... hahaha :P

"Evil"

So Jesse and I had an art contest with the topic "Evil", here's what I made. I don't think he's done yet. Took like... an hour or so with reference images for the faces

Facebook Thing

copy/paste for the win!

RULES!: Once you've been tagged, you are supposed to write a note with 25 random things, facts, habits, or goals about you. At the end, choose 25 people to be tagged. You have to tag the person who tagged you.

So Jeffrey Wei tagged me-- I guess I will do this -- hmmmm....

I reread this and it sounded kind of... depressing. Its interesting because I'm feeling pretty good right now :P Oh well-- hope its semi-interesting.

1. I am not really a communist, but I like to use open source/free software-- Firefox, Open Office, Google Chrome, Ubuntu, etc. If you ask me how to use Microsoft Word or Powerpoint or something, I will not be able to tell you anything because I don't use those applications. You will have to call Nandita for help with Microsoft products... oh wait. Hahaha! :D

2. I like learning and am a strong advocate of "read the textbook". There is nothing wrong with paying attention in class, but if you can't manage that, reading the book can save a lot of time and asking for help time.

3. I don't have an ipod, I have a zune. The only reason I go into the Mac store is to go to my own blog to increase traffic and make it from a different IP than my own. Shameless self promotion --> http://captainalan.blogspot.com
Currently, besides lack of support for asian characters, I'm really happy with zune, because I have a zune pass that was supposed to have expired in early january that's still valid... and I just got 10 free song credits... and I called zune and I'm not being billed... so wow-- free music, legally!

4. Drawing takes too long. I don't have the patience to do hardcore realist stuff >_> 3 hours spent shading some sphere could be spent talking to someone, reading something, cooking hash browns? ...so tedious. I guess you can listen to music or something while you do it.

5. Cleaning up after painting is annoying. Supplies in painting matter too much. Painting takes up so much room. I like to do digital painting more. But then my computer lags on that. Art is so tedious sometimes.

6. Storing sentimental stuff is annoying. I think I was pretty mean as a little kid too, so I only keep a lot of stuff because it would make my parents sad to throw it out or burn it or whatever.

7. I consider myself very tolerant and even-headed. I try to respect everybody's differences and have a good sense of humor. Perhaps I am to disrespectful at times because I take some things too lightly.

8. I think pretty much everything is interesting. That is why I am the jack of all trades and the master of none. I am trying to consolidate interests, but stuff is too interesting. All my old drawings, etc... A lot of it is mean spirited, and a lot of it doesn't even have that spark of creativity associated with young minds.

9. There are two water color + sharpie marker paintings downstairs in my house that I did in 6th grade of fish. For some reason my parents think these are wonderful. I think they took close to no skill and don't like them being displayed as if my best work. Another accomplishment I had as a kid was teaching myself how to juggle. Realistically, the level of skill I have at juggling can be achieved in 2 or 3 months with great ambition. I don't like exaggeration of accomplishment. The only reason anyone considered me "good" at juggling is because relative to other people I was good. That is because most people don't even try to do it. Look at Lawrence Yu. He approached my skill level in juggling in less than a fifth the time it took me to do it.

10. I never really watch TV. Sure I'll pass by the news now and then... but don't really watch. I'm kind of culturally illiterate because any allusion to a commercial or something I will not understand.

11. I text with correct punctuation and grammar (for the most part). I usually type the same way, except dropping "lol".

12. I like alternative things. That's one of the reasons I like open sources stuff (point 1) and have a zune (point 3). I used alternative keyboard layouts for a while-- a gave up on Dvorak for two hands though because it confused me too much, so now I only use normal qwerty and dvorak for left hand. Speaking of keyboard layouts, I think its amusing to use Spanish / Korean / Chinese keyboard.

13. I'm really bad at piano. Maybe its because I had a poor foundation-- no classical background. When I took up guitar I purposely took up classical first, firstly because I liked classical, and second because starting with a strong foundation, I felt, would be a great future asset.

14. Wikipedia is really really great. I don't know how I'd do APUSH without Wikipedia. If you ask me a question and I don't know the answer, I can go on Wikipedia really quick and pretend that I know what you're talking about. (lol-- but of course I don't do that, right? :D )

15. I believe in efficiency and effectiveness. I'm not a skilled mathematician or anything, but I think computer programming, math, etc are wonderful things and I seek to apply similar thinking to other stuff-- perhaps supporting efficiency and effectiveness in such a way comes down to the fact that I am fundamentally lazy. I actually want to apply myself, though I lack strong book smarts to begin with so there isn't much to apply at times >_>

16. I know more Korean than Chinese. I know more Spanish than Chinese. I know more English than Spanish. Its partially my fault, but this one can be legitimately, at least partially, blamed on circumstance.

17. I don't know what a want to do after high school, besides go to college somewhere and get married sometime not too late.

18. I used to listen to Classic rap on Sky.fm, that is how I started freestyle rapping. Some people tell me I suck, some people tell me I'm pretty good. Personally, I don't really like hip hop/rap in general. However, for those of us who can't sing, and know a lot of random things to make allusions to, so rap is aight.

19. I like Korean stuff. Korea seems as asian as anything else asia (though I haven't even been to asian yet! :/) it has all the good things of Asia like cute pencils and notebooks, dramatic sad music, interesting history, beautiful people..., but with some admirable features not found in China and Japan. S. Korea is primarily Christian whereas China and Japan remain quite secular. Korean writing has an alphabet, they make everyone learn English-- goes along with my appreciation for the effective and efficient--

20. I'm a picky eater. I like plain stuff a lot- like not adding sauce or whatever. I only eat salad without dressing, I'll eat french fries, but not mashed potatoes. What's his problem? I don't know :/ haha

21. Thinking about the current condition of the world is depressing. Oftentimes people say to think beyond your own little sphere in life. I agree. However, it is tragic to see how from our small circle of close contact to the sphere of all people how much suffering and illogical hatred there is. It is sad to see people in unfortunate circumstance.
How does one go about changing the world? I may partially believe in the gospel of wealth-- get rich so you can help on a grander scheme. I, however, am not one to dispel the importance of influencing one's sphere of close contact or donating time and effort to show that there is feeling, not just money behind intentions.

22. I'm too lazy to try to look cool. I'm blessed to look decent. My excuse to myself is that anyone that I'd want to talk to won't care how I look. Really, that is probably partially true, but I probably don't want to wake up an extra half hour early to look cool :P

23. I voluntarily signed up for zero period. I think I'm a morning person. I can't sleep in past 8. Yet I can easily fall asleep before 10.

24. I want to be everybody's friend. I want everybody to be happy. I don't think I hate anyone. I hope you feel the same way.

25. *insert something about social life and/or lack of*

Yesterday

My bro and I went and saw Coraline yesterday. Unfortunately, we didn't get to see it in 3d but it still looked nice. Overall I'd rate it high; I think it is an easy movie to appreciate. It was very well done, clean style, interesting looking characters, etc. The story was intriguing and it wasn't so juvenile that it would become boring. In fact, I found it rather scary. Very scary.

It kind of reminded me of this:

because it was claymation and scary. But besides that no real connection. Anyways, recommended for artsy people, emo girls, and people who take interest in all things. I don't know how much conservative parents and little kids would like this though. Like I said, a bit creepy.

Random Art

I drew this at Barnes and Nobles on the 9th and CG'd it a little since then... not quite done, but not quite motivated enough to finish completely now. Details take forever :P

3 minute post--

Right now I'm too lazy to go downstairs and cook some oatmeal or something, so I'll write up something instead.

Hrmmm... School has been interesting lately. This really harsh discipline thing is rather frightening- people who didn't do anything getting called up and interrogated for connections sake. If this weren't a school, I'd fear a government takeover and the beginning of a dictatorship. But I don't think that's legal in the state of California.

Rain is nice-- rather uncommon around here. Its been raining in awkward intervals. Usually its pretty warm here when it rains, but relatively speaking its been rather cold. It is amazing how some students wear close to nothing in less that 50 degrees weather, but then again, what does a Southern California boy know about cold weather and attracting the opposite gender by wearing less clothes? (haha)

I suck at Starcraft. I wasn't really trying... but it took me like 15 minutes to kill 7 PCs... and that is with cheats. I'm sure if I tried harder and did some micro-manage etc. I would have done okay, but wow. That shows how not south-korean I am.

V-Day is coming up. I don't know if I am going to do anything. I have to decide before end of today if I am going to do something for someone because there is no school on Friday. Mmmm... being creative is hard work.

Off to school!

So this Saturday, extended family celebrated Chinese New Years-- It is good to be Chinese-American-- all the benefits of both, except for the fact that I don't speak Chinese >_>

For Comp Sci. we have to do some JavaScript. JavaScript is annoying; though I'm not very experienced with it, I can see why it is becoming more and more obsolete. Also, I kinda miss compiling stuff... javac is nice for debugging.

I bought a new sketchbook and some flashcards at the Japanese book store today... mmm... tasty school supplies.

Drivers permit practice tests are boring. Good thing I can watch stuff while I take them because of our friend the Internet. I was watching Full House. Korean Drama is dramatic-- quite good so far though.

I suck at starcraft but it is fun. Terran must strike early to live.

Okay-- sleep time. What an unorganized post. Oh well.

Comic

((If you haven't gotten the joke yet, it's "screwed" ))

Actually I felt pretty good about my finals... haha ;)
